Welcome
to
the web site of West Point First United Methodist Church in
West Point, GA. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to scroll through the
site and learn a little about us, our worship services, our programs
and our outreach.
Our once bustling community has gone through some
hard times in recent years. The textile industry, upon which we
depended for most of our jobs, has been in decline since the 1980’s.
Today, all of the area mills are closed and nearly all textile jobs
are gone. During the 1990’s, it appeared that telecommunications—the
dot com revolution—would take the place of textiles and restore us to
economic health. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Now, however, a
really exciting future truly seems to lie in store for us--and in fact
is here--Kia
Automotive is running three shifts per day, producing automobiles
in their first North
American assembly plant right here in our town! Between Kia and
its suppliers, our area has gained several thousand jobs
Additionally, and, perhaps of even more importance
to the growth and development of the community, Point
University--formerly known as Atlanta Christian College--is moving to
West Point. 300-400 students will arrive in the Fall to begin
classes in downtown West Point. Buildings are already being
renovated and plans have been laid to accommodate student housing,
athletics and the arts department. The entire Valley area will
benefit from this move. It is indeed a very exciting and
challenging time for our
community.
Likewise, we at First United Methodist are already involved, looking
ahead and
planning for what all this means and will mean for us. We invite you to
join us
as celebrate the present, look to the future and explore creative ways
to spread the good
news of Jesus Christ to all who hunger to hear it. Our planning
committees are wide open for suggestions, ideas, dreams and visions and
we would love to hear yours.
You’re invited to come to Worship, Family Night Supper, Bible Study,
Sunday School and other small group activities and get to know us.
Together, we can grow in the love of Jesus and share that love with a
world that needs love more than ever. We look forward to meeting you at
306 East 7th Street—our little corner of the church universal of Jesus
Christ.
